Molehill Sketch, Breacon Beacons National Park, Herefordshire

This sketch was made on a blustery Spring day on a walk up to Hatterall Hill. The field was peppered with freshly dug molehills exposing mounds of finely tilled earth. The materials used were sourced within a 3 metre radius of the molehill – the fresh and dewy moss from the ground forming the inner circle, then the dried greying thistle heads and curling leaves, followed by the straight white nettle stalks and the coarse marsh grasses. Despite hefty gusts of wind all the circles stayed put just long enough to take a photo of the 6ft diameter drawing.
