Ash Leaf Stalk Drawing, Belmont Wood, Herefordshire

This drawing was made on 11/11/11 in Belmont wood outside Hereford. The wood is made up of mainly oak and ash trees and provides a quiet haven from the busy bustle of the city centre. The drawing was made using collected fallen ash leaf stalks that lay along the muddy path. A circle was made c. 9ft in diameter by clearing the fallen leaves exposing the dark ground and then laying the light green stalks within it. The brightness of the stalks and their individual shapes and lines contrasted beautifully against the earth beneath. Following the patterns and shapes of the bottom stem of each stalk these four star drawings emerged.
